Memory care is a specialized form of assisted living built for people with Alzheimer's, dementia, or other conditions that affect memory and judgment. It's not the same as standard assisted living, even though many communities in Hartford offer both under one roof. The difference shows up in the details: secured entrances and exits to prevent wandering, staff trained specifically in dementia behaviors, structured daily routines, and floor plans designed to reduce confusion (simple layouts, consistent lighting, clear sightlines to common areas). We're tracking 35 memory care providers across the Hartford area, ranging from small dedicated dementia-care residences to larger campuses with a memory care wing.
What to look for when comparing providers
Staffing ratios matter more here than almost anywhere else in senior care, especially overnight. Ask how many caregivers are on shift per resident, and how much dementia-specific training they receive beyond basic certification. Look at how the community handles behavioral changes like agitation or sundowning, whether medication management is in-house or contracted out, and how they communicate with families when something changes. Tour at different times of day if you can. A community that looks calm at 10am can feel very different at 5pm.
Because the stakes are high and the differences between providers aren't always obvious on a website, we built a ranked guide to assisted living and memory care in Hartford that scores providers on the factors families actually ask about: staffing, safety features, reviews, and responsiveness. Our approach is explained in full on the methodology page.
